I remember around 2018 i discovered ‘The Big Push’ for the first time. It was amazing, 4 blokes looking like they were from completely different eras coming together having the most fun and playing great music… what’s not to love? The performance that stuck out the most to me was ‘Wade in the water/Trouble so hard/Feeling good’. That bass line, the grittiness, Ren pouring his heart into that microphone & ripping the bass as if it was an electric guitar - fucking magic. I used to listen to it on repeat jamming along as if i was amongst it. Englishman in New York is one of the first videos I got to work with Ren on. We actually met on an earlier shoot that basically changed my life forever and whilst we’ve worked on many since, it’s these earlier ones that hold a special feeling in my heart. They remind me of a time where I was a bit lost with all things creative and coming in and seeing the amazing vision and drive going into all of these just blew me away. After the first one I moved to Brighton and that was the start if a new era for me but also a difficult transition. I didn’t know anyone here and I wasn’t sure where to go with it all but Ren instantly stepped up and had my back. Not only giving me great things to work on but helping me find my way in many other aspects. Whilst he’s taking some time to prioritise himself and his health it’s a privilege to be a part of his team and to be able to do what we do together. I’m so proud of the guy and everything he’s accomplished and overcome to get here and I know that we’re going to keep finding new ways to make that happen whilst taking good care of him and ourselves. This was the first video I ever shot in a professional sense. It was me and Luke Flegg shooting on a hot summers day. I remember at the time I had a entry level canon. Which was my first digital camera. I remember standing there filming feeling the sheer amount of energy that they put into their performance and feeling the energy coming back off the crowd, and then this rush of adrenaline coming over me as I realised how special this all was and just moving along with the song fast and as chaotically as I could. I think it was the first time I realised that if you feel the music inside you and the emotion of a performance and let it flow through you into your camera work it just adds to what you capture. A few weeks after the busking I remember we were all chilling down the beach and Ren turned to me and said he really loved the footage I shot that day and that they had edited the video for paint it black only using my footage, as he said I had managed to capture the feel of it just right. I was honestly shocked, but those few words gave me the courage to take myself more seriously and for the first time view this as a career path that I could pursue rather than a far off dream that seemed unattainable. I remember finding it after it was posted sitting there looking at my name in the credits of the video and then looking at the views in disbelief. So for me this is probably the most special video I have ever filmed. And to be honest its my personal favourite Big Push performance ever.
