Winning the mop at @JOY: A New True Musical was definitely a highlight of my NYC trip. 🧼✨ But my first thought? “How am I going to get this home?” 😂 I work for an airline, and ours is stingy about carry-ons and personal items. But thankfully I was flying Delta, and had already upgraded to First Class (I knew I had a LOT of cargo after three weeks on the road). With two free checked bags included, I figured I had options. Still… it’s a mop. And the Delta ticket counter agent gently warned me that TSA could flag it as a potential weapon. (Like a baseball bat or golf club.) So I just smiled and said, “It’s just a mop,” and tried to keep it light. They swabbed it, tested it, and—yep—the mop was cleared for takeoff. ✈️ Once on board, I expected to shove it in an overhead bin, but Adam, the lead flight attendant, offered to store it in the aircraft closet. I got a few weird looks walking through Newark Liberty with a mop over my shoulder, but TSA agreed—there’s no rule against flying with a mop. (I guess no one ever asked??) If you do go see Joy the Musical—and you absolutely should, it’s only running for 8 weeks at the Laura Pels Theatre—try to snag an aisle seat. Betsy Wolfe might just hand you the most joyful (and dramatic) Broadway souvenir of all time. 🧹💫 And if you do win a mop, let me know how you got it home. Okay, so… confession time: I definitely procrastinated this self-tape. 😅 I don’t have a consistent reader, then I was in China, then I lost my voice in New York… so this thing kept getting pushed further and further down the to-do list. Cut to my final day in NYC. One hour before the deadline. I’m in line for a jazz club. No lighting. No good background. No controlled studio space. Just me, my iPad, and a dream. 😂 I called my girl Allison to read lines with me over the phone, and I filmed the whole thing in the middle of Times Square. Because naturally, if you’re gonna shoot a post-apocalyptic scene, Times Square at night feels… oddly fitting?
