Another great way to grow Peace Lillie’s is in Leca or just water too! LECA (Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate) is a semi hydroponic way of growing plants. Step 1: Remove all soil! This process is the longest part. Step 2: Rinse Leca to remove clay particles (AVOID rinsing in sink). Step 3: Trim roots if needed (you can trim up to a 3rd of the roots on a plant without major issues) and remove and soft or dying roots. Step 4: Fill net pot or cache with Leca, plant, and fill the rest with Leca to the top. Step 5: Water it in and keep 1/3 filled with water and your liquid fertilizer of choice and place in cover pot. As the plant adapts, it will show active signs of success but will sometimes show stress too. Keep an eye on the plant during this transition and remove dying leaves as you see them. Are you a carnivorous plant fan? A mix of peat, sand, perlite, orchid bark, and chopped Sphagnum works well for substrate. No regular potting soil for carnivorous plants. Keep the substrate evenly moist and well draining. Consistent care will be how you continue to develop the pitchers but if you struggle with gaining new ones, it may be due to lack of light or needing an increase in humidity. Even indoors they will attract and capture an occasional fly or other insect but if you feel they have not received any food, you can drop in a few dead crickets, flies, or a few pellets of osmocote fertilizer every few months. Keeping a plant healthy will decrease your chances of a thrip infestation. I won the battle with thrips but it severely affected the look of my Monstera. Here’s some things to do if you find yourself with thrips too: 1)Isolate the plant Thrips fly so try to isolate the best you can from other plants. 2)Physical removal Use masking tape to physically remove and cut off any badly infected leaves to help reduce spreading. Rinse the entire plant under a strong spray of lukewarm water, especially the undersides of leaves where thrips hide. 3)Treat with insecticidal soap Spray the entire plant, especially the undersides of leaves and along stems. Repeat every 5–7 days for T least 3–4 weeks (this will depend of the what life cycles it’s in. Beneficial insects or a systemic insecticide are two other options. I try to avoid systemic as much as possible but in worst case scenarios, this may be my last option. I have been using SN209 over the last few months and I’ll update over its effectiveness soon. A terrarium that needs little to NO maintenance NO direct sunlight for any terrarium. It can burn the foliage of your plants and cause a mess. I keep mine near a grow light. Plants used: -Small fern -Fittonia -Variegated Pilea Microphylla -String of turtles cuttings -Small piece of Driftwood -Live moss I’ll continue to update changes along the way! A phalenopsis Orchid in water culture! This is NOT the only way to grow an orchid, but this is one way. Most common medium used for orchids is just plain orchid bark. You can incorporate large pieces of perlite and sphagnum moss if you want your medium to hold a little more moisture. But NO soil for orchids! Gosh forbid a person take time away from their plants! Headed to the @Southeast Plant Show in Georgia and how do prep all 300+ houseplants while I’m away? I make sure they’re all freshly watered if needed right before I go. Any thirstier plants I have in self watering pots so they don’t need me for a while anyway. All my growlights are plugged into timers (8am-8pm), close the shades and call it a day! #planthumor #plantpeople
