Fun fact: I try to center most of my work around Islam and positivity. But this painting, to be quite honest, was painted in spite. l've seen far too many women in our culture conditioned into the trap of people pleasing, and l've always found it strange. Being socially aware, hospitable, and part of something bigger than yourself is beautiful. Sharing the love is important. But it often comes with the harsh reality of slowly losing pieces of yourself. Over time, that self abandonment builds up as quiet resentment until you no longer recognize who you are or what you even want. The hands in this painting aren’t turning out as realistic as I’d like. It feels as though my skills in painting realism are waning, and I’m unconsciously leaning toward Impressionism. But perhaps art doesn’t need to be realistic to be meaningful and valuable. Realistic painting is what I’ve always been praised for since I first started in high school.
